It all started with the lights dimming, and an anxious crowd roaring. Suddenly four shapes strut out slowly before the house lights come up and take their positions like gargoyle statues on a Victorian home. A buzz of distortion and a single slam on the kick drum and suddenly The Dead Weather came alive. Possibly one of the most thunderous acts in rock today, a super group consisting of an obscure mixture of artists, The Dead Weather's music creates an atmosphere all it's own.
Allison Mosshart's stage presence instantly mirrored the lyrics to their opening song, Sixty Feet Tall, with her pulling her own hair and standing firmer than most rock legends at the front of such an ear rattling band, making her seem that tremendous. Even when she took on the guitar, she stepped, shook and mesmerized an entire audience. Her vocals matched album quality as she wailed like a banshee and sounded like she meant it. Many men left with crushes that night, to say the least, judging by the banter of the crowd in the lobby after the show.
Jack White's presence didn't over shadow the rest of the band in the least bit. Of course it is always overwhelming to watch him play in real life, but the band wouldn't be the same if it was missing even one component. Fertita's guitar and keyboard playing is what really filled the venue with the moodiness and emotion that their music imposes. Jack Lawrence even left himself unforgettable, after setting down the bass and wailing on the drums while White took over guitar duties.
Even though they had just come from the Coachella festival the night before, they still played with full force to an enthusiastic crowd. The set list also contained songs off their upcoming album, Sea of Cowards. The new tracks proved that this sophomore release will be just as contagious as its predecessor and still delivering with maximum potential. Despite being Jack White's third project, if it were his only The Dead Weather would still be a lasting stamp on rock music.
